Nasdaq Sets Stage for 23-Hour Trading Day on December 6
Nasdaq is set to launch an extended trading day on December 6, 2026, with a nearly 23-hour session. The new schedule will include a 9 PM to 4 AM ET overnight session, five days a week.
The existing regular session from 9:30 AM to 4 PM ET will remain unchanged and continue to set prices for the market. This move is part of Nasdaq's 'Always-On' initiative, aimed at matching markets that operate continuously, including cryptocurrency.
Nasdaq Chairman and CEO Adena Friedman stated that the exchange is excited to lead the transition to a new operating model, creating a more 'lit market environment 23/5'. The Securities and Exchange Commission approved Nasdaq's core 23/5 trading proposal in early Q2 2026. However, additional regulatory sign-off and confirmation of the securities information processor's readiness are still pending.
The new safeguards for the overnight session include static price bands that will automatically reject orders placed outside specified limits. Traders participating during this period will need to use new order entry ports, with some order types unavailable. Law firm Alston & Bird has cautioned listed companies about thinner liquidity and higher volatility during night trading.
Nasdaq's exchange currently operates from 4 AM to 8 PM ET, with only 2% of total trading volume happening outside these hours. Rival exchanges are also extending their operating hours, with the New York Stock Exchange considering a 24-hour model inspired by cryptocurrency markets that never fully close.
