The AI revolution is bringing about rapid advancements in capabilities, but alongside this excitement and speculation about its impact on society comes a pressing need for regulatory oversight. According to recent reports, there are over 2,000 proposed policies aiming to govern AI, yet none of them address the establishment of a long-term regulatory framework.

Government announcements of new regulatory actions have been flooding in, with states considering over 1,500 bills and Congress having hundreds on its agenda. The executive branch has also initiated dozens of executive actions, but despite these efforts, the industry remains fragmented, with various stakeholders holding diverse views on how AI should be regulated.

In an op-ed piece, Bob Greifeld, managing director and co-founder at Cornerstone Financial Technology, argues that a national regulatory body is necessary to oversee the AI revolution. He draws parallels between the establishment of the SEC in 1934 after the stock market crash and the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) following the Three Mile Island incident.

Greifeld suggests that policymakers should proactively establish a national regulatory body with a broad mandate to address both today's and tomorrow's opportunities and challenges. While he acknowledges that this is not a panacea, he believes it is essential for navigating the complex and dynamic landscape of AI regulation.
