NEAR Intents Exploit Ends with $3.8M Recovery, But Questions Remain
A recent exploit on the NEAR Intents platform, which allows users to move funds without bridges, resulted in the theft of $3.8 million on October 1st. The team quickly flagged the issue using its AI security layer (SHIELD) and shut down the service for about an hour to investigate. The attacker was tracked within 24 hours and was given 48 hours to return the funds by NEAR Intents' General Manager and Co-Founder of Aurora Labs, Alex Shevchenko.
However, the attacker surprised everyone by agreeing to negotiate and eventually returning the full $3.8 million. The funds were recovered within two days, making it one of the fastest exploits to be resolved recently.
As a result, the community is split on whether the attacker was genuinely interested in security research or simply trying to get away with the loot. NEAR Protocol's Founder, Illia Polosukhin, suggested that the attacker could have used bug bounties instead of exploiting the system.
The incident highlights the growing trend of crypto hacks, with Q3 losses surging from $86 million to $742 million. The NEAR Intents hack is notable for its swift resolution, but it remains to be seen whether the recovery will have a positive impact on the altcoin's price.
