NEAR Protocol experienced a significant price surge over the weekend, with its cryptocurrency rising 15.8% between Friday afternoon and Monday afternoon. This jump came on the heels of a broader rally that has seen NEAR's price more than double over the past month.
The rally was driven by several factors. NEAR Intents, a feature that allows users to trade assets across different blockchains, handled a record $4.8 billion in swaps in September. The fees from these trades contribute to NEAR token buybacks, creating steady buying pressure. Additionally, a governance proposal aims to reduce NEAR's annual token issuance from 2.5% to 1.6% over two years, which could further support the token's value if approved by validators.
A short squeeze also played a role in the weekend rally. Traders betting against NEAR saw roughly $6.5 million in short positions forcibly closed in a single day, necessitating the purchase of the token to cover those positions. This forced buying amplified the price increase.
NEAR Protocol stands out by enabling seamless cross-chain transactions through its chain signatures feature. This allows NEAR accounts to sign transactions on other networks, including Bitcoin, without the need for clunky bridges. The recent price jump builds on the momentum generated by the launch of the Bitwise NEAR ETF on Sept. 29, the first U.S. spot exchange-traded product tracking the token.
While short squeezes can drive rapid price movements, they are typically short-lived. The long-term outlook for NEAR will likely be influenced by factors such as the volume of trades on NEAR Intents and the outcome of the token issuance vote. Upcoming economic reports, like the U.S. Consumer Price Index (CPI) due on Wednesday, could also impact market volatility and NEAR's price.
