NEAR Protocol's Meteoric Rise Fades as Investors Weigh Risks and Rewards
The NEAR Protocol has experienced a significant surge in value over the past three months, rising 156% by September 30. This growth was largely driven by the launch of its private trading feature on September 17, which allows users to trade perpetual futures without connecting their wallets to their trading positions. As a result, NEAR's price jumped 27% in a single day to about $4.43, and trading volume more than doubled.
Despite its impressive performance, NEAR has started to pull back, dropping about 6% since September 30. The token remains roughly 75% below its all-time high of $20.44, reached in January 2022. Solana, a rival cryptocurrency, has climbed more slowly but has attracted steady investor backing, including a record intake of $188 million in the week ending September 25.
While NEAR's rapid climb relies heavily on a single launch and swift buying, Solana benefits from weeks of steady ETF demand. The argument for Solana being the safer option may weaken if Solana ETFs experience a week of withdrawals.
