Near Protocol's Staking Mechanism Powers Private AI Compute

Near Protocol has launched a staking mechanism for its NEAR token, allowing users to access private AI compute without paying recurring fees. The 'Staking for NEAR AI' feature was introduced on July 30 and quickly gained traction, with over 500,000 NEAR tokens staked within two weeks.

The core idea is simple: users stake their NEAR tokens and receive recurring compute credits, which can be used to fund confidential AI workloads. The economics follow a straightforward linear model, where staking 500 NEAR generates around $5 in monthly AI compute credits.

These credits are both withdrawable and non-expendable on the principal side, meaning users can pull their staked NEAR back at any time without losing their base position. The compute credits themselves fund 'confidential inference,' which is AI model execution that happens inside hardware-isolated secure environments.
