Nevada Crypto Scam Conviction Sparks Warning About Growing Threat
A recent case in Nevada's courts has highlighted the growing threat of cryptocurrency scams. In August, a federal jury convicted businessman Brent Kovar of running a scheme that took $24 million from at least 400 investors.
The scam promised returns of 15 to 30 percent and claimed to have hundreds of millions of dollars in cryptocurrency reserves. However, it did not. The scammers were able to convince their victims to send money through various means, including cryptocurrency kiosks.
Nevadans reported over $205 million in cryptocurrency-related losses in 2025, according to the FBI. The author notes that while the number is large enough to get attention, it's the stories behind these losses that matter more. Many victims are left with drained retirement accounts or lost savings meant for children or grandchildren.
The author emphasizes the importance of having conversations about financial scams before they happen. They recommend that families have uncomfortable discussions about potential risks and warn against falling prey to scammers who create a sense of urgency.
