Nexo Survey Reveals Operational Friction as Top Barrier to Crypto Wealth Building
A recent survey by Nexo found that high-net-worth investors are not deterred from investing in crypto due to conviction, but rather due to operational friction. The survey polled 1,000 affluent investors in the US, UK, and Argentina, and found that while about 67% of respondents already own crypto, the average Crypto Integration Index (CII) score is just 4.83.
The CII measures how deeply crypto is embedded in an investor's financial life, beyond ownership. It combines factors such as allocation size, holding horizon, retirement integration, substitution from traditional assets, and risk perception into a single composite score. The survey found that the gap between owning and building wealth with crypto is stark, and that ownership rates vary sharply by market without moving in lockstep with usage depth.
Risk perception was not the primary barrier for investors, accounting for only 13.6% of the CII variation. Substitution and retirement decisions explained 54.2% of the variation. According to Iliya Kalchev, analyst at Nexo, 'Risk perception used to be the story in every crypto adoption survey. It isn't anymore.'
The survey also found that younger investors own more crypto but integrate it less into their financial lives. Integration peaks at ages 35-44, where 28% of holders treat crypto as a core retirement asset. Among 'Structurally Integrated' investors (CII score 7 or higher), friction shifts towards platform trust, with security concerns leading at 36%, followed by high fees and platform complexity.
