NIST Sets Quantum Deadline for Crypto Projects: Migration Must Start Now
The cryptographic locks protecting trillions of dollars in digital assets are vulnerable to quantum computers. The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) finalized three post-quantum cryptography standards in August 2024, setting a hard deadline for crypto projects to migrate away from elliptic curve cryptography.
NIST's guidance is clear: organizations must begin planning the transition to post-quantum cryptography now. However, many blockchain projects have no binding post-quantum upgrade roadmap, creating a fragmented and time-pressured security landscape.
The threat to blockchain security comes from Shor's algorithm, which can factor large integers and solve the discrete logarithm problem in polynomial time on a quantum computer. A sufficiently powerful quantum computer could break Bitcoin's 256-bit elliptic curve encryption, but the risk is not equally distributed across all assets.
