Nomura-Backed Exchange Lists SHIB as First-Mover in Japan's Crypto Market
Laser Digital Japan, a subsidiary of Nomura's digital assets company, has completed its registration and is now authorized to operate as a crypto asset exchange service provider in Japan under the Payment Services Act.
This marks the first new registration in four years, following significant regulatory reforms introduced by Japan since 2022. The reforms include changes around stablecoins and an increased focus on digital assets as a diversification tool for institutional investors.
Laser Digital will initially enhance liquidity across the domestic market for local Virtual Asset Service Providers (VASPs). Future services will include offering institutional investors trading opportunities for digital assets, with Shiba Inu (SHIB) being one of the six tokens handled first.
Kuro, a Shiba Inu community member, highlighted the significance of this development: 'SHIB in Japan's crypto asset infrastructure for institutional investors. At this point, it's safe to say SHIB holds a special status in Japan.'
