Nomura Cracks Japan's Crypto Licensing Wall with New License
Nomura Holdings' entry into Japan's crypto market marks an important milestone after a four-year drought of new registrations. Laser Digital Japan, Nomura's bank-affiliated operation, has secured license No. 00032 as a Crypto Asset Exchange Service Provider under Japan's Payment Services Act.
The license covers six major cryptocurrencies: Bitcoin, Ethereum, XRP, Bitcoin Cash, Litecoin, and Shiba Inu. These assets are part of the industry association's 'Green List,' allowing registered operators to offer them without separate regulatory filings.
Nomura is not targeting retail traders but instead focusing on institutional trading for professional investors. The firm plans to supply liquidity to licensed crypto firms, enabling bigger orders to clear without disrupting thin order books.
The approval reflects growing demand from sophisticated investors for regulated infrastructure, according to Steve Ashley, co-founder and executive chairman of Laser Digital. He stated that the registration demonstrates their ability to meet regulatory requirements in Japan, building on their track record in other markets.
