Non-Dollar Stablecoins Struggle to Compete with USDT Dominance
Non-dollar stablecoins are struggling to gain traction in the global market despite growing demand for alternatives to USDT and other dollar-denominated stablecoins.
The $316 billion global stablecoin market is dominated by USD-backed tokens, with USDT holding a market capitalization of approximately $184 billion. These dollar-pegged stablecoins account for 97% of the total market share, making it challenging for non-dollar alternatives to compete.
However, regulatory shifts are forcing the question in specific regions faster than expected. The EU's MiCA regulation, which took effect in June 2024, pushed Tether to delist its euro stablecoin EURT and Binance, Coinbase Europe, and Crypto.com to delist USDT for EU customers.
The result was rapid growth in compliant euro alternatives over the following twelve months. Circle's EURC saw volume grow 1,139% according to a December 2025 report from payments firm Decta. Monthly euro stablecoin volume surged from $383 million to $3.83 billion in the year after MiCA took effect.
The GENIUS Act, passed in July 2025, reinforced dollar stablecoin dominance through a clear federal framework. Japan's yen-pegged stablecoins hold less than 0.01% of the dollar-pegged stablecoin market capitalization despite having a carefully designed regulatory framework already in place since 2023.
