North Korea has firmly denied any involvement in the recent $6.3 billion cryptocurrency heist from Binance, the largest crypto theft on record. The FBI had previously accused Pyongyang of orchestrating the attack, but the North Korean government dismissed the claims as baseless.
Kim Yo Jong, sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, called the US assertion “absurd rhetoric and nothing new” in a statement released by the official Korean Central News Agency. The denial came just a day after the FBI publicly blamed North Korea for the Binance breach.
The heist has drawn significant attention due to its unprecedented scale, with over $6 billion in digital assets stolen. The FBI’s accusation had raised concerns about state-sponsored cybercrime, particularly given North Korea’s history of hacking operations targeting cryptocurrency exchanges.
Despite the denial, the US government has not yet responded to North Korea’s rebuttal. The incident highlights the growing risks of cyber threats in the crypto space and the challenges of attributing responsibility for such attacks.
