Norway's Sovereign Fund Surpasses $700 Million in Indirect Bitcoin Exposure
Norway's Government Pension Fund Global, which manages $2.4 trillion in assets, has reached a record high of indirect Bitcoin exposure without directly investing in the cryptocurrency. According to K33 Research, at the end of the first half of 2026, the fund held 11,549 BTC in indirect Bitcoin exposure.
This marks the sixth consecutive reporting period of growth and the first time in five-digit BTC territory for the fund. The increase in exposure is attributed to Norges Bank Investment Management's (NBIM) passive investment strategy, which tracks broad global equity indices that include companies holding Bitcoin on their balance sheets.
The largest contributor to NBIM's indirect Bitcoin exposure is Strategy Inc., with 9,914 BTC-equivalent, accounting for 85.8% of the fund's total exposure. This increase far exceeded the fund's net portfolio-wide gain for the period, suggesting that reductions elsewhere partially offset the growth in Strategy's balance sheet.
K33 Research head of research Vetle Lunde emphasized that this growth is not a deliberate allocation decision by Norway's fund managers but rather a byproduct of their passive investment strategy. The dollar value of NBIM's indirect Bitcoin exposure is approximately $725 million, representing 0.03% of the fund's total assets under management.
