NSA Softens Stance on CLARITY Act, Allows Legislative Process to Proceed
The National Sheriffs' Association (NSA) has softened its stance on the Digital Asset Market Clarity (CLARITY) Act, shifting from opposition to a neutral position.
In a letter to Senate Majority Leader John Thune and Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, the NSA cited the significant work undertaken by Congress, the Administration, and stakeholders in navigating the legal, regulatory, and enforcement considerations involved in addressing the bill.
The NSA previously expressed opposition to provisions in the CLARITY Act, specifically amendments that exempt crypto mixers from registration requirements. They argued that this provision would impair law enforcement's ability to trace transactions and recover victims' money.
The Senate agriculture and banking committees passed their versions of the bill in 2026, but many interest groups and lawmakers continue to raise concerns about aspects of the legislation.
