Nvidia’s AI Token Connection: Attention vs Performance

Nvidia Corp’s (NASDAQ:NVDA) influence on AI tokens is becoming increasingly hard to ignore, but data from CoinMarketCap suggests investors should not confuse attention with performance.

Alice Liu, Head of Research at CoinMarketCap, notes that AI tokens tend to rally sharply around Nvidia events such as earnings and product launches. However, their longer-term returns often look nothing like the chipmaker's, making the connection more event-driven than fundamental.

Liu states that 'attention correlates. Returns don’t.' She cites an example from August's earnings cycle, where AI tokens rallied up to 60% in the week before Nvidia’s Aug. 27 results, but then sold off on the print after Nvidia reported $96 billion in revenue versus $92 billion expected.

The performance gap between Nvidia and AI tokens is striking, with Nvidia up 33% over the year covered by CoinMarketCap's data as of Sept. 10, while Bittensor fell 26%, Render dropped 63%, and FET declined 74%. However, in the shorter term, AI tokens gained between 13% and 100%, while Nvidia rose about 3%.
