NZD Crumbles Despite Rate Hike as RBNZ Keeps Tightening Loose
The Reserve Bank of New Zealand (RBNZ) raised its Official Cash Rate (OCR) by 25 basis points, from 2.5% to 2.75%, in a widely anticipated move.
Despite the rate hike, the New Zealand Dollar (NZD) plummeted 1.45% on Wednesday, trading at around 0.5810.
RBNZ Governor Anna Breman emphasized that policymakers aim for gradual monetary tightening to bring inflation back towards the 2% target midpoint while supporting economic growth and employment.
The RBNZ's cautious guidance suggests investors are focusing less on the rate increase itself and more on the central bank's future monetary policy decisions.
