NZD Strengthens Above $0.5900 Amid Better-Than-Expected China PMI Data
The New Zealand Dollar (NZD) has strengthened above $0.5900 against the US Dollar (USD), thanks to better-than-expected Chinese economic data. China's Manufacturing Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) improved to 49.8 in August, surpassing market consensus of 49.7.
The improvement in PMI data provided support to the NZD/USD pair, which gained momentum to near $0.5915 during early European trading hours on Monday. However, Fed Chair Kevin Warsh's speech at the Jackson Hole Economic Symposium sent a strongly hawkish signal, potentially lifting the Greenback and creating a headwind for the pair.
The Reserve Bank of New Zealand (RBNZ) is expected to maintain a firm policy tone at its upcoming meeting, reiterating that further Official Cash Rate (OCR) increases appear likely. This guidance would be consistent with ongoing above-target inflation and solid domestic growth warranting additional tightening.
