OCC Clears Path for US Banks to Engage in Cryptocurrency Activities
The Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) has lifted restrictions on US banks' participation in cryptocurrency activities. This move allows financial institutions to manage crypto assets, engage in stablecoin activities, and participate in node verification networks without prior approval.
According to Acting Comptroller Rodney E. Hood, banks must still demonstrate robust risk management controls for these novel activities. Hood emphasized that the OCC expects 'banks to have the same strong risk management controls in place to support novel bank activities as they do for traditional ones.'
The regulatory change reverses a directive from the Biden Administration, which required US banks to obtain explicit clearance before participating in cryptocurrency activities.
