OCC Eases Restrictions for Banks to Engage with Cryptocurrencies
The US Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) has relaxed its rules for banks to engage with cryptocurrencies and stablecoins. Financial institutions can now manage crypto assets without needing special pre-approval, as long as they have robust risk management controls in place.
This shift marks a significant change from earlier policies, which required banks to meet specific conditions before participating in crypto-related activities. The OCC has eliminated the need for these conditions, reducing administrative burdens for financial institutions interested in cryptocurrency operations.
According to Acting Comptroller of the Currency Rodney E. Hood, 'The OCC expects banks to have the same strong risk management controls in place to support novel bank activities as they do for traditional ones.'
