OCC Grants Conditional Charter to Crypto-Focused Firm Tied to Trump Family
The Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) has granted a conditional de novo banking charter to World Liberty Financial, a company heavily involved in cryptocurrency markets. This move is significant and has sparked controversy due to its ties to the Trump family.
A de novo banking charter is given to an institution that forms a bank from scratch, rather than through a merger or acquisition. Typically, these banks face greater federal scrutiny and oversight in their early years.
The OCC's primary goal is to develop a robust pipeline of de novo banking institutions, which they believe is crucial for a healthy national banking system. However, the company's involvement in cryptocurrency markets raises concerns about risk exposure, particularly after the collapse of Silicon Valley Bank (SVB).
Some critics have expressed concern that the charter approval will lead to increased corruption and ultimately result in tears. A senior agency official stated that overly cautious regulations since the 2008 financial crisis have discouraged applicants from seeking a federal bank charter.
