OCC Greenlights Trump-Backed Stablecoin Venture's Federal Charter Bid

Share

The Office of the Comptroller of the Currency has conditionally approved a national trust bank charter for World Liberty Trust Company, allowing it to expand its USD1 stablecoin operations under direct federal supervision. The approval marks a significant step toward giving World Liberty Financial more control over the issuance and custody of its stablecoin.

The OCC granted preliminary approval for the application in January 2024, which was originally filed by World Liberty Trust Company, the banking arm of President Donald Trump's family crypto venture. The regulator stated that it will oversee the trust company's operations, ensuring 'robust OCC oversight, including regular examinations.'

World Liberty Financial has grown its USD1 stablecoin rapidly since its launch in March 2025, reaching a market capitalization of roughly $4 billion and becoming the fourth-largest stablecoin. The Trump family has earned approximately $50 million from the token through June 2026, according to Reuters.
