Oconee County Authorities Recover Stolen Cryptocurrency in Elderly Fraud Scam

Share

Authorities in Oconee County, Georgia recovered stolen cryptocurrency from elderly fraud victims after tracing and seizing the funds. The scam involved scammers posing as Federal Trade Commission agents who tricked victims into withdrawing money from their bank accounts and depositing it into cryptocurrency kiosks.

The investigation was a joint effort between the Oconee County Sheriff's Office, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI), and the Georgia Attorney General's Office. According to authorities, the scam began when victims received pop-up messages on their computers claiming their bank accounts had been breached.

Victims then contacted people they believed were agents with the Federal Trade Commission, but were actually communicating with scammers. The scammers instructed them to withdraw money from their bank accounts and deposit it into cryptocurrency kiosks.

As a result of the investigation, Oconee County deputies, the GBI, and the Georgia Attorney General's Office were able to recover the stolen cryptocurrency and return it to the victims.
