October Rate Hike Odds Plummet as Crypto Regulation Uncertainty Reigns
The Federal Reserve's next policy move has been significantly reassessed by financial markets in October. New York Fed President John Williams' comments have led to a decrease in implied probability of an interest rate hike from around 70% to 50%. This shift affects borrowing costs, bond yields, currency markets, and risk-sensitive assets.
Williams emphasized that there was 'no rush to act,' leaving the timing dependent on incoming economic data and the Fed's assessment of financial conditions. Another increase is still possible later in the year.
In the cryptocurrency industry, the U.S. Senate failed to advance the CLARITY Act with a 49-50 vote. The agencies have continued using existing authority to address regulatory gaps, issuing conditional relief and proposing rules. However, agency action cannot create a comprehensive jurisdictional framework without congressional legislation.
