Oil Prices Plunge as Trump Announces Iran Talks
Crude oil prices plummeted on August 3, dropping by over 6% after US President Trump announced the resumption of diplomatic talks with Iran and canceled planned military strikes against the country. This move effectively removed the geopolitical risk premium that had been factored into crude prices since tensions escalated earlier in the year.
The cancellation of large-scale military strikes was a significant development, but it's what wasn't said that mattered more: the Strait of Hormuz, through which around 20% of the world's oil supply passes, appeared to be safer overnight. This followed a June memorandum aimed at reopening the Strait and addressing nuclear concerns.
Meanwhile, OPEC+ approved an additional production quota increase of 188,000 barrels per day for September, further contributing to the price drop. This move is seen as a signal that the cartel isn't interested in defending triple-digit prices.
