OKX Expands into Emerging Markets with Stablecoin Conversion App
Crypto exchange OKX has introduced a new app called OKX Money, allowing users in emerging markets to convert over 50 local currencies into U.S. dollar-backed stablecoins. The platform aims to address challenges like currency volatility, limited banking access, and high foreign-exchange fees in regions like Latin America, Africa, South Asia, and the Middle East.
OKX Money offers three stablecoins: Paxos’s USDG, Circle’s USDC, and Tether’s USDT. The service promises up to 10% annual yield on eligible USDG balances, virtual and physical cards without foreign-exchange markups, and referral rewards. Haider Rafique, OKX’s global managing partner, highlights the inefficiencies of traditional finance, such as slow bank settlements and frozen credit limits for travelers.
This launch is part of OKX’s recent expansion, following a March funding round with Intercontinental Exchange (ICE), which valued the exchange at $25 billion. OKX also announced a new platform for round-the-clock trading of tokenized U.S. stocks and an account-protection program, OKX Shield, offering reimbursement for users in case of third-party takeovers.
Rafique believes the crypto industry is at an inflection point, with emerging market investors shifting focus from speculative assets to more stable opportunities. He advocates for more stablecoin alternatives, such as a Singapore-dollar-backed stablecoin, to provide stability and trust in the global market.
