OKX, a major crypto exchange, has attracted new investment as it shifts from a pure digital asset trading platform to a broader financial technology hub. The latest backers include Circle, Ripple, Qube Research & Technologies (QRT), and SC Ventures, the venture arm of Standard Chartered. The company did not disclose the investment amount, but the deal values OKX at $25 billion on a pre-money basis, matching a March investment from Intercontinental Exchange (ICE).

OKX founder and CEO Star Xu emphasized the company's evolution from an exchange into a comprehensive financial platform. The goal is to enable customers to manage, spend, invest, and grow their money seamlessly within the same ecosystem. This expansion reflects a broader industry trend as crypto exchanges increasingly diversify into payments, stablecoins, stocks, derivatives, and tokenized assets.

OKX's collaboration with ICE underscores its push into traditional markets. This week, an OKX-ICE joint venture filed to introduce tokenized stock trading under the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) framework. The platform plans to offer 24/7 trading in tokenized shares of 63 U.S. companies using OKX’s X Layer blockchain and stablecoins like USDC, USDT, and USDG. The initiative is an early test of the SEC’s new five-year tokenization framework, with shares retaining dividend and voting rights.

However, the success of this model remains uncertain. Macquarie’s report suggests adoption will depend on OKXICE attracting sufficient companies, investors, and liquidity providers to ensure reliable pricing. The temporary nature of the SEC exemption could deter institutions from investing in system integration until regulatory clarity improves. TD Securities echoed similar concerns, predicting early adoption may lean toward retail investors due to existing institutional access and regulatory hurdles. The platform could still offer insights into stablecoins as settlement tools in regulated financial markets.
