Old Bitcoins Emerge as Network's Oldest Holdings Reawaken
A dormant Bitcoin wallet that had been inactive since 2011 has moved again, adding to a recent burst of activity among some of the network's oldest holdings. The wallet, which initially received its Bitcoins on June 17, 2011, when the price was around $15 per coin, transferred 10 BTC on August 29. This move came after approximately 15.2 years of inactivity.
The value of these coins at the time of transfer was approximately $777,000, according to Galaxy Research data cited by industry publications. This represents a price increase of around 503,000% from the estimated acquisition level in 2011.
This transaction is part of a broader pattern that has emerged in August, with several addresses holding Bitcoins for more than a decade becoming active. Earlier in the month, other transactions involved 85 BTC dating back to December 2012, 8.54 BTC originating from June 2011, and 10.74 BTC received during the same month.
The trend resembles other episodes where very old wallets suddenly return on-chain. Such transactions attract attention because long-term holders control supply that rarely circulates.
