Onchain RWA Perp Volume Surges, Outpaces Centralized Exchanges
The onchain perpetual futures market for real-world assets has experienced a significant surge in recent months. According to an analysis by a16z crypto, onchain platforms handled 86% of all RWA perp volume in August 2026, up from just over a third the previous year.
Total monthly RWA perp volume reached $117.3 billion in August 2026, a 44x increase compared to the same month a year prior. Open interest in RWA perpetual futures also expanded dramatically, growing from $161 million in July 2025 to $4.8 billion by the end of August.
The composition of what's being traded has shifted significantly, with equities now accounting for 48% of trading volume across RWA perps, commodities making up 28%, and indices representing 18%. This shift is attributed in part to infrastructure upgrades such as Hyperliquid's HIP-3 protocol, which simplified market creation and enabled more efficient liquidity sharing.
In contrast, centralized exchanges are losing ground, with only one US-regulated platform currently approved to trade a single perpetual futures product. Meanwhile, onchain venues are listing dozens of markets across various asset classes.
