Open USD Stablecoin Backed by Visa and BlackRock Launches on Ethereum
A new institutional-focused stablecoin called Open USD (OUSD) is set to launch on Ethereum, backed by over 140 companies including Visa, Mastercard, Stripe, BlackRock, and BNY. The consortium behind OUSD aims to differentiate itself from established stablecoins like USDT and USDC by distributing earnings generated from reserve assets to ecosystem partners, rather than concentrating them with the issuer.
The decision to launch on Ethereum is significant, as it solidifies the network's position as the leading blockchain for institutional finance. As Fundstrat co-founder Tom Lee noted, 'Open USD choosing Ethereum is validation that after 11 years one blockchain reigns supreme for the future of finance.'
