OpenAI and Anthropic Unite for Federal AI Model Review
OpenAI and Anthropic have joined forces in Washington to push for a federal review system for advanced AI models, despite being competitors in the field. This cooperation comes as President Trump's executive order on June 2 directed federal agencies to establish a classified benchmarking process by August 1.
The proposed framework would allow developers to request government evaluation of their models and provide access for up to 30 days before release to other trusted partners. This process would apply across the industry, including rivals such as Meta and xAI.
Nvidia, Meta, and Microsoft have warned against sweeping controls on open-weight AI models, arguing that they could weaken US leadership in the field as competition with China intensifies.
