OpenAI Cuts Prices on Smaller Models Amid Growing Scrutiny
OpenAI has lowered prices on its smaller AI models, including an 80% reduction for its entry-level Luna model. The price cut comes as corporate America questions whether its AI spending is paying off and Chinese competitors offer comparable capabilities at lower price points.
The Luna model's input costs dropped from $1 to $0.20 per million tokens, while output costs fell from $6 to $1.20 per million tokens. The mid-tier Terra model saw a 20% reduction in pricing, with input costs moving from $2.50 to $2 per million tokens and output costs decreasing from $15 to $12 per million tokens.
The price cut is seen as a response to growing scrutiny over AI spending, with CFOs reviewing the return on investments. OpenAI's pitch is that its smaller models are now capable of handling tasks previously requiring the more expensive flagship Sol model.
