OpenAI Fuels Future of Journalism with AI Education Partnerships

OpenAI has announced an expansion of its efforts to integrate artificial intelligence into journalism. The company is launching new collaborations with the Tow-Knight Center for Journalism Futures at CUNY's Newmark J-School and Northwestern University's Medill School of Journalism.

The initiative aims to provide students and faculty with tools like ChatGPT Edu subscriptions, which will enable them to explore AI's potential to transform reporting, storytelling, and newsroom operations. Over 400 ChatGPT Edu licenses will be distributed to the two schools for the 2026-2027 academic year.

Gina Chua, Executive Director of the Tow-Knight Center, emphasized the importance of teaching students about AI's role in journalism. 'Generative AI is a transformative technology that will remake the information ecosystem,' she said. Jeremy Gilbert, a professor at Medill, highlighted equity in access, noting that the partnership ensures tools are available to all students, regardless of financial barriers.

This initiative comes as the industry grapples with seismic changes brought about by AI. OpenAI believes that the next frontier lies in equipping students not just with tools, but with the skills and critical frameworks needed to deploy AI responsibly.
