The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) is investigating an online cryptocurrency investment scam in Kingsville that resulted in losses exceeding $200,000. A couple reported losing money after responding to an ad on a popular communications application, believing their investments were in Bitcoin and other cryptocurrency.

The victims were promised high returns but became suspicious when the suspect demanded more money. They contacted police in mid-September after realizing they had likely been scammed.

The OPP is reminding residents to be cautious of online investment opportunities and not give out personal information or send money to strangers. The Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre estimates that only 5-10% of victims report scams, with total losses reported at $351 million in 2025.
