Optimism Foundation Plans Massive OP Token Release
The Optimism Foundation is planning to release a significant amount of new OP tokens into circulation over the next year. According to its budget outlook, approximately 343 million new tokens will enter the market by April 2027, pushing the circulating supply to around 2.5 billion OP and representing about 58.3% of the total capped supply of 4.295 billion tokens.
The largest allocation comes from the Ecosystem Fund, which is expected to release 200 million OP into circulation, followed by 47.6 million OP for early core contributors and another 15.3 million OP for investors. The Governance Fund will also contribute 10 million OP.
The foundation emphasized that these numbers are 'directional estimates' subject to adjustment based on program performance and input from the project's governance body. This planned increase in supply is not a new allocation, as no request for additional tokens has been made, and operations are proceeding within the original distribution framework established for the project.
The projected increase comes against a backdrop of declining commitments in the prior fiscal year, with Optimism Collective committing roughly 150 million OP during its fourth year of operation. This marked a decrease of around one-third compared to the previous year, driven by factors such as the discontinuation of the Retro Funding program and no user airdrop taking place.
