Options Boom: Crypto Derivatives Market Shifts Towards Volatility Management
Crypto options have made significant strides in the derivatives market, accounting for nearly half of Bitcoin's notional open interest. According to Glassnode and Bybit's joint report, 'The State of Crypto Derivatives', this shift towards options is a structural change in the market.
The growth of options has been particularly notable at Bybit, which captured 28% of tracked volume for its Bitcoin options. This represents a nearly tripled share from less than 10%. Frederik Theissen, Head of Research at Glassnode, noted that Ether makes up about one-third of Bybit's options volume over the past 90 days.
Bybit has also established itself as the leading venue for tokenized gold perpetuals, holding the largest book among tracked venues for 476 consecutive days. The platform's options book has grown more than fourfold, reaching $2.33 billion in August.
