Oracle Stock Slumps Amid $18B Project Jupiter Financing Stress
Oracle's stock has taken a hit this year, plummeting by over 40% from its highest point. The company is facing significant headwinds, with one major issue being its massive data center project in New Mexico, known as 'Project Jupiter'. This $18 billion endeavor is tied to Oracle's AI ambitions and part of the giant $300 billion contract with OpenAI.
Investors are growing jittery about local backlash against the project, which has faced significant opposition. Loans tied to Project Jupiter are trading at 89-91 cents on the dollar, a sign that investors fear loss. This is unusual, as debt typically trades near par in healthy markets.
The company's soaring debt and declining creditworthiness have also raised concerns. Despite announcing relatively strong results, with revenue jumping 30% to $19.3 billion and cloud division making $11.6 billion, the stock continues to drop. The remaining performance obligations (RPO) rose to $664 billion, with $300 billion tied to OpenAI.
