Oracle Stuck Paying Debt on Troubled Data Center Project
Oracle's massive AI data center project, Project Jupiter, has hit another hurdle. The tech giant issued a force majeure notice to Blue Owl Capital's Stack Infrastructure unit on September 24 due to power infrastructure complications, but this won't get them out of paying for the site. According to Oracle's agreements, they remain contractually obligated to continue paying debt costs and cannot terminate the lease.
Project Jupiter spans 1,400 acres in southern New Mexico and is designed to deliver approximately 2.45 gigawatts of power capacity when fully operational. The project was part of Oracle's broader commitment exceeding $300 billion for AI infrastructure, with a target start date of 2028.
The force majeure notice signals that timeline is now in question, primarily because of complications surrounding natural gas pipeline access needed to fuel Bloom Energy fuel cells at the site. This isn't the first issue Project Jupiter has faced; it has already encountered multiple rejections for necessary permits and legal challenges related to environmental concerns.
