Pakistan's Crypto Market Faces Regulatory Challenges Amidst Rapid Growth
The regulatory challenges facing Pakistan's crypto market are similar to those faced by regulators worldwide. With an estimated 40 million Pakistanis holding crypto-linked accounts and $10-20 billion invested in virtual assets, the scale of this ecosystem is a major concern.
Pakistan has created the Pakistan Virtual Assets Regulatory Authority (PVARA) to regulate virtual asset service providers and establish a formal licensing framework. However, the more difficult question is why existing crypto users would move from offshore platforms into the regulated domestic ecosystem.
The key challenge for PVARA is making the regulated system more attractive than the offshore alternative. This means easy conversion between rupees and digital assets, integration with banks and payment systems, competitive transaction costs, consumer protection, efficient dispute resolution, and legitimate everyday applications.
