Pakistan's Power Division Eyes Relief for Electricity Consumers Amid Bitcoin Mining Stalemate
The Power Division in Pakistan is considering a proposal to provide relief to non-protected domestic electricity consumers. The current system charges additional rates for 6 months after exceeding 200 units of consumption, which has been a point of contention for consumers.
A new proposal under consideration would charge the additional rate only in the same month when consumption exceeds 200 units, and not for the following 5 months. This change is aimed at providing relief to non-protected consumers who are currently affected by the existing formula.
The issue of supplying electricity at reduced rates for Bitcoin mining remains unresolved, with the government struggling to convince the IMF on this matter. If a solution cannot be found, projects like Bitcoin mining and data centers may have to be shut down due to high electricity costs.
