Peirce Calls for Shift Away from Mass Data Collection in Financial Regulation
Outgoing SEC Commissioner Hester Peirce has called for regulators to rethink their approach to monitoring the financial system, advocating for less personal data collection. In a speech at the SIFMA's Digital Assets Conference in New York, Peirce criticized the current regulatory mindset of 'data go up,' comparing it to crypto enthusiasts' obsession with rising prices.
Pierce argued that collecting and storing large amounts of data on law-abiding customers does not effectively help catch criminals. Instead, she believes that new technologies such as zero-knowledge proofs and attribute-based credentials can confirm facts without revealing personal details.
The 'Crypto Mom' has been a vocal advocate for a more balanced approach to regulating the crypto space. As she prepares to leave her post at the SEC in November, Peirce is urging regulators to consider alternative methods of verifying identity that don't require collecting and storing sensitive information.
