Peirce Exits SEC Amid Shift in Cryptocurrency Enforcement
Hester Peirce, known as 'Crypto Mom', is leaving her post at the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) on October 2, 2026. She has been a commissioner for nearly eight years, earning praise from the cryptocurrency sector for her advocacy of transparent regulatory frameworks.
During her tenure, Peirce directed the SEC's Crypto Task Force, which was established in February 2025 under President Donald Trump's leadership. Under her guidance, the task force developed classification frameworks for various digital asset categories and advanced comprehensive rulemaking efforts.
The commission published additional guidance on cryptocurrency asset classification questions alongside Peirce's resignation announcement. The guidance addresses token promotion, software modifications, and staking receipt tokens within investment contract frameworks.
Peirce will join Regent University School of Law as an associate professor in November, focusing on federal litigation, securities regulation, and digital asset studies.
