Peirce Seeks End to KYC Panopticon
SEC Commissioner Hester Peirce has made a call to end the so-called 'KYC panopticon' in her final weeks at the Securities and Exchange Commission. The term refers to the complex network of Know Your Customer (KYC) regulations that govern financial transactions worldwide. According to Peirce, these rules have created an overly burdensome system that stifles innovation.
The Commissioner argued that the current KYC framework has become too broad and invasive, imposing significant compliance costs on businesses while failing to effectively prevent illicit activity. She suggested that a more targeted approach would be more effective in balancing security with innovation.
