Pendle's Yield Tokenization Revolutionizes DeFi Risk Profiles
Yield tokenization is a mechanism that separates yield from an underlying asset and turns both into tradeable tokens. This concept, built on by Pendle, allows users to buy fixed yields, speculate on variable yields, or provide liquidity without touching the underlying asset.
Pendle's protocol works by accepting yield-bearing tokens from major platforms, issuing Principal Tokens (PT) and Yield Tokens (YT), and running its own automated market maker. PTs trade at a discount because they give up yield in exchange for guaranteed redemption, while YTs trade based on expected yields before maturity.
The protocol offers three use cases: fixed yield, where users lock in a specific return; yield speculation, where users bet on rising yields; and liquidity provision, which allows users to earn swap fees and incentives. Each strategy carries different risk profiles, with fixed yield being the closest DeFi equivalent to buying a fixed-rate bond.
The introduction of maturity dates fundamentally changes the risk profile compared to standard DeFi positions. PTs redeem at full value only at maturity, while YTs decay in value as the maturity date approaches. Market timing and pool selection matter when using Pendle's protocol.
