Pentagon Taps Tech Titans to Chart Future of Warfare
Pentagon Secretary Pete Hegseth has assigned a high-profile group to lead Project Meridian, a 120-day study aimed at charting the future of warfare and identifying capability gaps in the US military. The project will be co-led by Elon Musk of SpaceX, Palmer Luckey of Anduril, and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich.
The group's mandate is broad, requiring them to map future warfare domains, identify capabilities gaps, and propose solutions for advanced military capabilities. They will also oversee the development of AUTOWARCOM, a new organization responsible for speeding up the integration of autonomous and robotic systems across the US military.
AUTOWARCOM is expected to become a four-star combatant command by October 1, 2027, signaling that autonomy is being treated as a core mission rather than a side project. The restructuring also includes reductions in the ranks of general and flag officers, with more outside technologists shaping strategy.
