Petrobras Deploys Cardano Apps for Renewable Fuel Sustainability Claims
Petrobras, Brazil's state-controlled oil company, has developed two blockchain-based applications on the Cardano network to improve sustainability claims for renewable fuels. The projects focus on preventing double counting of environmental benefits for sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and diesel.
The first application tokenizes environmental attributes associated with SAF into digital tokens on Cardano, aiming to align with the Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA). This Book-and-Claim approach separates the environmental benefit from the physical fuel, allowing it to be assigned to specific parties. The system also enables passengers to claim these tokens through an application and receive a certificate tied to their journey and associated environmental claim.
The second application targets Petrobras' Diesel R renewable diesel, using 'digital checkpoints' to record information across production, transportation, and end use stages. This data can support Scope 3 reporting, which covers indirect emissions across a company's value chain.
