Petrobras Deploys Cardano Apps for Sustainable Aviation Fuel and Diesel Tracking
Petrobras, Brazil's state-controlled oil company, has developed two blockchain-based applications on Cardano to improve how sustainability claims are traced across renewable fuels. The projects focus on preventing double counting of environmental benefits, a long-standing issue in verifying claims tied to sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and renewable diesel.
The first application tokenizes environmental attributes associated with SAF into digital tokens on Cardano, aiming to align with the Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA). The Book-and-Claim model separates the environmental benefit from the physical fuel, allowing it to be assigned to specific parties. This approach is designed to make it easier to match sustainability credits with end users and reporting obligations.
The second application targets Petrobras' Diesel R renewable diesel, using 'digital checkpoints' to record information across key stages: production, transportation, and end use. The data generated by this workflow could support Scope 3 reporting, which includes indirect emissions across a company's value chain.
Petrobras began its research and development relationship with the Cardano Foundation in 2023, expanding to broader energy-sector research with PUC-Rio's Ledger Labs in 2025. The absence of scale metrics makes it difficult to gauge near-term network or revenue implications for traders and investors watching blockchain adoption.
