Petrobras Leverages Cardano Blockchain for Sustainable Fuel Claims

Petrobras, Brazil's state-controlled oil company, has deployed two blockchain-based applications on Cardano to improve sustainability claims for renewable fuels. The first application tokenizes environmental attributes associated with sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) into digital tokens, reducing the risk of reusing the same claim multiple times.

The SAF application follows a Book-and-Claim approach, separating the environmental benefit from the physical fuel so it can be assigned to specific parties. This allows airlines and companies to match sustainability credits with end-users and reporting obligations more easily.

The second application targets Petrobras' Diesel R renewable diesel, using 'digital checkpoints' to record information across production, transportation, and end-use stages. The Cardano Foundation says this system could support Scope 3 reporting for indirect emissions across a company's value chain.
