Petrobras Taps Cardano Blockchain for Cleaner Fuel Tracking

Petrobras, Brazil's state-controlled energy company, is exploring the use of the Cardano blockchain to track claims about lower-carbon fuel. The company has announced two research projects that utilize Cardano's capabilities: one for sustainable aviation fuel and another for Diesel R, a diesel made partly from renewable materials.

The project on sustainable aviation fuel tackles a problem with how green fuel is sold. Under the 'book-and-claim' model, an airline can pay for the environmental benefit of sustainable fuel even if the fuel itself is used elsewhere. To prevent double-counting of emissions reductions, Cardano's blockchain records where each benefit originated and when it was claimed.

The diesel project aims to record information at each stage of production, transportation, and use, creating a history of the fuel's journey. This could help companies report Scope 3 emissions, indirect emissions across their suppliers and customers.
