Petrobras Taps Cardano Blockchain for 'Green' Fuel Tracking
Petrobras, the Brazilian state-owned energy company, is testing Cardano's blockchain technology to track 'green' fuel. The initiative involves two research projects launched by Petrobras on September 30 with the collaboration of the Cardano Foundation and several research organizations.
The first project focuses on tracking the environmental attributes of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), while the second project monitors data related to the production and use of Diesel R, a renewable fuel produced by co-processing conventional diesel with renewable raw materials. The blockchain application is currently in an experimental phase, with no disclosed timeline for large-scale implementation or the volume of fuel the systems might cover.
Cardano's technology tokenizes batches of SAF on the blockchain, allowing airlines to refuel with SAF at one airport while transferring the environmental benefit to another company or passenger. The platform also enables passengers to receive certificates linking their calculated share of SAF for a flight to the original fuel data.
